Far-Infrared Absorption Studies of 1.5 nm Gold Nanoparticles
Abstract
We have carried out the far-infrared (7 cm-1 < ω < 140 cm-1) transmission measurements of the ligand stabilized Au55 nanoparticles dispersed in Teflon at volume fractions ranging from 0.2% to 1%. The diameter of the Au55 nanoparticles was 1.5 nm with no size distribution. We observed an onset of the absorption with an energy gap at ∼ 10 cm-1 ( ∼ 1. 2 meV). However, we did not find the Gor'kov and Elishberg type energy level correlation effects on the absorption [1]. We also found that the far-infrared absorption by the Au55 nanoparticles is anomalously larger by more than two orders of magnitude than that predicted by the classical theory, consistent with the previous conclusion [2].
