Electronic Raman scattering in the heavy-fermion compounds CeMIn_5, ( M = Rh, Ir and Co)
Abstract
Temperature dependent Raman scattering experiments in the ab-plane of CeMIn5 single crystals are reported. For M = Co, we have observed in the A_1g channel at 10 K five Raman modes at 35, 40, 60, 120 and 160 cm-1. The temperature dependence of this Raman spectra revealed a possible renormalization of the electronic continuum in the spectral region between 18-150 cm-1 bellow 100 K. Further, the modes at 35 and 60 cm-1 disappear abruptly at 20 and 30 K, respectively. In this temperature range the mode at 120 cm-1 presents a strong broadening of 150 cm-1 and survives only at 100 K. Above 100 K only the modes at 40 and 160 cm-1 are present. We discuss that the peaks at 35, 60 and 120 cm-1 might be of electronic character and those at 40 and 160 cm-1 could be associated phonons and crystal electric field excitation, respectively. A comparative study of our Raman data for the three CeMIn5 will be presented.
