Local Ordering in the High-Tc Superconductor BiSrCaCuO
Abstract
Using a scanning tunneling microscope for energy resolved mapping of the electronic density of states in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+/delta single crystals, we report atomic scale characterization of the pseudogap state in a high-Tc superconductor. These measurements reveal that the electronic states at low energies, within the pseudogap, exhibit sptial modulations having an energy-independent incommensurate periodicity. These patterns, which are oriented along the copper-oxygen bond directions, appear to be a consequence of an ordering phenomena--the observation of which correlates with the pseudogap in the density of electronic states. We will discuss these results and similar measurements in the superconducting state.
