PVD Fabrication of Graded Density Be Capsules at LLNL
Abstract
Be capsules over 100 microns thick with step graded Cu doping have been fabricated at LLNL by sputtering. In initial fabrication runs 2 mm capsules exhibited a columnar grain structure with nanometer sized voids producing a 2-3% void volume . The methods used recently to increase the material density and their resulting effects on grain structure , surface roughness, and power spectrum will be described. The results of material strength measurements will be correlated with grain structure and Be capsule thickness. The successful removal of plastic mandrels through a small laser drilled hole will be also described.
