Investigating the improved stability properties of graded doped capsules and planar foils
Abstract
We present radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of indirect drive ICF capsules and planar foils with variable or ``graded'' dopant levels in the ablator. There is currently strong interest in capsule ablators with graded dopants for ignition designs on the NIF due to their improved stability to short wavelength perturbations. We present simulations and analysis of graded capsule designs that demonstrate these improved properties. To further isolate these stability properties in a more simplified geometry, we also discuss new designs for graded dopant experiments using planar foils.
