Liner compression of a hard-core diffuse z pinch
Abstract
One possible plasma target for Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) is the hard-core diffuse z pinch. 2D resistive MHD simulations, that include non-ideal effects such as thermal conduction and radiation, show intriguing self-organization by which stable pressure profiles are generated by the non-linear evolution of interchange modes. Despite convective thermal transport, simulations show substantial heating during liner compression. UNR experiments are planned to study the target plasma, and a liner experiment (with no injected plasma) is planned to study flux compression in a geometry compatible with a diffuse hard-core z pinch using the pulsed-power Atlas facility (23 MJ, 30 MA).
