Optical Spectra from Collisions of Multiply-Charged O^q+ and C^q+ with CO and H_20 gases.^1
Abstract
As part of a program to simulate optical and x-ray emission from multiply-charged solar wind ion collisions with selected cometary gases (H_2O, CO), we have observed line spectra in the visible range (400-800nm) from O^q+ and C^q+ ion collisions. The ions are generated in the University of Connecticut Van de Graaff accellerator. Spectra are obtained with an automated CCD-grating spectrometer. Initial identifications indicate collision-induced lines from final projectile charge states ranging from q to q-2. ^1 This research is supported under NASA EPSCoR grant No. NCC5-601 to the Connecticut Space Grant Consortium
