Optimization of access waveguide width of multimode interference (MMI) couplers
Abstract
We show that the weighted sum of phase errors of modes of multimode interference (MMI) waveguide is minimum for largest access waveguide width. Also, we show the improvement in the performance of MMI couplers for their use as splitters and sum and difference units by the optimization of access waveguide widths. The optimized access waveguide widths can also be roughly estimated from the characteristic curves of the weighted sum of phase errors of the modes and coupled amplitude at nearby access waveguides by the input itself.
