Book Review: Coal: A human history. by Barbara Freese, Perseus Publishing, Cambridge, MA, 2003, 308 p.
Abstract
Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover. With a picture, vintage about 1900, of a coal dust-covered young boy with a whip draped around his neck, suggesting that he was a mule driver. On the cover, we know from the start that the book will not provide a glowing picture of coal. The author, as an assistant attorney general for Minnesota for over 12 years, played a role in enforcing Minnesota's air pollution laws, some of the stricter rules in the country. On page 2, she states, "Coal is a commodity utterly lacking in glamour. It is dirty, old-fashioned, domestic, and cheap."
