Science and Present Status of MAXI on the ISS-JEM
Abstract
MAXI (Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image) is the X-ray all sky monitor which will be attached to the JEM-EF on ISS. MAXI will scan the whole sky once every 90 minutes with Gas Slit Camera (GSC) sensitive in the 2-30 keV band, and with Solid-state Slit Camera (SSC) covering the 0.5-10 keV band.
The detection sensitivity will be 7 mCrab in one scan and 1mCrab in one-week observation. MAXI can not only monitor the X-ray intensity variation of the Galactic object such as X-ray novae and transients, but also extragalactic objects such as bright AGN's. MAXI enables us to monitor long-term variabilities of several tens AGN simultaneously for the first time. MAXI can also observe the diffuse soft X-ray sky with better energy resolution of CCD than that of ROSAT survey in the mission life. MAXI instrumentations are in progress for flight model. We will give a talk on the present status of MAXI. The ISS program, however, was delayed for a few years, and thus the MAXI launching time may be delayed to 2008.
