Diffusion controlled reactions of metal ions at iron oxides in fluids
Abstract
In aqueous suspensions containing charged microcrystals heavy metal cations can react at the surface of these microcrystals. We present a theory(1) that determines the reaction rate by solving analytically i) the nonlinear Poisson Boltzmann equation for non symmetric electrolytes ii) the Nernst Planck equation for transport of ions in a selfgenerated electric field. The agreement between theory and various experiments is excellent.Typically, for chemical reactions at the surface of the microcrystals, the diffusional transport is the rate limiting process.
