Cls contribution to ra2 absolute range calibration
Abstract
CLS is in charge of the Envisat RA-2 absolute range calibration in the North West Mediterranean Sea. The project consists of two parts: the determination of the instantaneous sea level and the calibration of Envisat RA-2 with in-situ measurements. CLS developed a software to compare remote sensing measurements with in situ data which are not under Envisat passes. The adopted solution was to propagate in-situ measurements towards the satellite tracks by the use of specific algorithms through geophysical models. By using the best geophysical models available in the calibration area, a RA-2 bias was computed for each in situ measurements. The expected accuracy of the study can only be achieved by using a large number of measurements to reduce random errors as well as a diversity of measurement techniques and independent data analysis to reduce susceptibility to systematic errors. Statistics were computed to provide a global result taking into account the various errors due to measurements and corrections. This poster presents the final results of the absolute calibration.
