A polar view of major substorms
Abstract
The poleward extent of auroral expansion during substorms can be an indicator of the magnitude of the disturbance. A few auroral storms expand to encompass the whole polar region for extended periods. There have been a number of such disturbances observed from our polar station at Eureka, Nunavut (89 deg CGM) during the winters of the past decade, including those of Nov 8-9/91, Feb 21/94 and Jan 10-11/01. Such major disturbances will be reviewed in the context of what differences they portray phenomenologically compared to the more typical substorms.
