GPS meteorology: software implementation for tropospheric tomography
Abstract
In order to analyse a critical rainfall evolution and to foresee a runoff event an high spatial and temporal resolution of ZWD is requested. Therefore ZWD estimation, obtained by GPS data processing, is not sufficient for this purpose. A tomography software, descibed in this work, was implemented to obtain a useful spatial and temporal resolution. Although the software can work with each kind of PWD estimation, in order to perform a tropospheric tomography a different processing strategy was set up based on a GPS software working with double differenced data. This alternative processing strategy abandons the tropospheric azimuthal isotropy hypothesis during ZWD estimation to obtain information about the delay along a generic signal propagation path and considers the differences between a satellite in a generic position and a satellite into a small tropospheric cone in which azimuthal isotropy is assumed. Software and strategy potentiality were tested on simulated and real data and are critically discussed.
