Automated generation of Mediterranean Sea SST imagery
Abstract
A novel method of automated georeferencing of NOAA/AVHRR imagery is used in conjunction with University of Miami Pathfinder SST (based upon coefficients of the previous year) to generate accurately declouded high precision (0.3 °C) SST`s suitable for assimilation into forecasting models of the Mediterranean circulation. Georeferencing is carried out in few minutes based upon the information present in the single bands and does not rely on ground control points procedures that require hours of computer time for comparable 1-pixel accuracy. Channel 2 (4) of AVHRR is used during the day (night) to optimize radiance contrast between land and sea.
