Large-eddy simulation and parametrization of the stable boundary layer
Abstract
Large-eddy simulations (LES) of the equilibrium stable boundary layer (SBL) are conducted in order to test the new Met Office Unified Model (UM) stable boundary layer parametrization scheme. The simulations are at higher resolution than previously reported in the literature, and agree well with the observations of Nieuwstadt (1984). The similarity profiles for heat and momentum fluxes, the scalings for dissipation and pressure covariances, and the height diagnosis used in the new scheme are compared with the LES data. The simulations provide guidance about the modification of the underlying assumptions for dissipation and height diagnosis, and the most appropriate closure constants. The scheme shows reasonable agreement with the LES, providing confidence that it will be useful in the UM forecasting and climate prediction setting.
