The ASSET Project
Abstract
The EU-funded "Assimilation of Envisat data" (ASSET) project is a major European initiative in Earth Observation (EO). Its overall rationale is to exploit and develop EO data using data assimilation to: (a) develop a European capability for chemical and UV forecasting, and (b) provide analyses for coupled climate/chemistry studies. It will provide a network for the long-term exploitation of EO data within the European Research Area concept. ASSET will add value to the Envisat data by their assimilation into Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) systems and photochemical models. The Envisat data to be assimilated will be from: AATSR (Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer), GOMOS (Global Ozone Monitoring by Occultation of Stars), MERIS (MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer), MIPAS (Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding), and SCIAMACHY (SCanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CHartographY). ASSET brings together experts from all aspects of the assimilation problem: NWP systems, chemical data assimilation, numerical modelling, meteorology, retrieval theory, assimilation theory, data measurements, data analysis and data management. It builds on the Envisat calibration/validation (cal-val) effort. Beneficiaries include NWP agencies, ESA, climate/chemistry researchers, government, industry and the public.
