Internal waves and benthic processes on Australian North West Shelf
Abstract
On the Australian North West Shelf, energetic internal waves are known to be generated by tidal forcing. Recent field observations at one site over a four-month period have examined the induced velocity field and its variation over the depth. Analysis of the records can be compared to the behaviour of internal wave boundary reflection processes as described by theory and observed in the laboratory. The results show enhanced energies in the benthic regions associated with critical internal wave energy reflection. In addition, periods of intense activity are observed which while short-lived induce very intense near-bottom turbulent mixing
