The Electronic Structure of Mn Doped ZnS Determined by X-ray Spectroscopy
Abstract
We have studied ZnS doped with 10 % Mn by soft x-ray emission and absroption spectroscopy at the L_2,3 edge of Mn, and find, by resonant inelastic scattering, d-d transitions at 3 eV and at 6 eV. Mn in ZnS is similar, but not equivalent, to divalent Mn compounds such as MnO and MnF_2. An atomic calculation suggests that the loss states may correspond to ^4G and ^2G states in doubly ionized Mn. The emission and absorption spectra will be compared to atomic calculations and electronic density of states calculations where the role of the Mn as an impurity will be discussed.
