Theoretical Analysis of Propagation of Gaussian Beam in Semi-infinite and Finite Nonlinear Media
Abstract
The propagation of an externally focused Gaussian beam in nonlinear materials has been studied, where propagation diffraction effects have not being neglected. A quadratic index profile has been assumed everywhere along the beam path. The solution is an extension of the well known ABCD formalism to nonlinear propagation. These results are applicable to isotropic liquids, thin films, and crystals having strong optical Kerr effect. Our analysis includes the phenomena of self-focusing, defocusing, mode-locking, and self-phase modulation.
