Achieving long range order in diblock copolymer thin films by the use of thermal gradients
Abstract
We have studied the annealing of monolayer films of cylindrical polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene-alt-propylene) (PS-PEP) diblock copolymers at fixed temperature, in temperature gradients and in swept temperature gradients. For our PS-PEP system conventional annealing yielded correlation lengths on the order of about 3 μ m, sweeping the gradients through the order-disorder transition at a rate of 1 μ m/s yielded correlation lengths on the order of 20 microns and repeated sweeps (from an AC modulation of the temperature) yielded correlation lengths greater than 50 μ m
