Shock Compression in Pre-Compressed Helium, Hydrogen, and Nitrogen
Abstract
By confining a compressible sample at room-temperature between diamond flats in a diamond anvil cell at several GPa static pressures we can reach sizable initial densities. By launching a laser-driven shock into the sample we can probe a wide region of the phase diagram intermediate to the states reached with shocked cryogenic and isothermal diamond-anvil cell samples. We will present our first data using the Omega laser at the University of Rochester on pre-compressed He, H_2, and N2 samples.
