Analysis of cryogenic DT target yield degradation due to vapor-ice interface roughness
Abstract
We use the DRACO 2D Lagrangian radiation hydrodynamics code to examine the effects of vapor-ice interface roughness on cryogenic DT target yield. The simulation modeled the effects of a uniform laser pulse on a spherical DT target with a vapor core encapsulated by a solid DT shell. This uniform target simulation produced a DT neutron yield of 1.97616E+19 neutrons. Surface roughness was modeled by perturbing the vapor-ice interface. This paper examines cosine shaped perturbations with amplitudes of 0.5 microns to 12.0 microns in 0.5 micron increments and l-modes of 2 through 10 for each of the perturbation amplitudes. The resulting DT neutron yields are then compared to the uniform case to determine the effect of vapor-ice interface roughness on target yield.
