Promoting Pre-college Science Education - an Ever Expanding Program
Abstract
The General Atomics Fusion Education Program, with continued support from DOE, will begin its 10th year as an educational resource for teachers and students interested in plasma and fusion science. Increased off-site school visits by scientists and engineers have excited thousands of students and have allowed teachers to bring a real presence of science into their classroom when DIII-D facility operating schedules or school schedule conflicts won't allow a field trip to the DIII-D facility. The educator workshops that we provide range from the traditional short lecture to full-day laboratory workshops that allow the teachers to build classroom relevant demonstrations covering vacuum, eddy currents, plasma, and fluorescence. Workshop content may include the basics of the electromagnetic spectrum, plasma, radiation, and fusion science. In addition to the classroom visits and workshops, we have continued to offer facility tours, classroom materials, and have expanded to include new regions and larger audiences. This year will be the 4th year of producing multiple on-stage science demonstrations for as many as 600 students at a time in the fall Science Technology Education Partnership (STEP) Conference in Riverside, CA.
