Identification of an isomer and octupole correlation in 217Th
Abstract
The Fermi levels for protons and neutrons in proton rich nucleus 217Th lie near f7/2 & i13/2 and g9/2 & j15/2 for neutrons. This gives rise to large octupole correlations. Study of high spin isomer in this heavy nucleus provides information of the effect of this correlation on the single particle states.Isomeric states in ^217Th have been studied by the reaction ^172Yb(^48Ca,3n)^217Th at 219 MeV, using γ-ray spectroscopy and the Recoil Decay Tagging method at Argonne. Level scheme of 217Th has been extended upto the isomeric (25/2^+) state. The half life was measured to be 20± 5 μs. The systematics of N=127 nuclei indicates a larger octupole correlation in 217Th.
