Nuclear Structure Physics at HIγS: Parity Assignments to Levels in ^92Zr and ^96Mo
Abstract
Nuclear resonance fluorescence measurements have been performed on the nuclei ^92Zr and ^96Mo using the polarized photon beam at the High Intensity γ Source (HIγS) to determine the parities of low-lying dipole states. The quality, intensity and 100% polarization of the γ-ray beam at HIγS are responsible for the superior performance of this facility in making unambiguous parity assigments to dipole states. The aim of these experiments is to identify the two-phonon 1^+ mixed-symmetry state (scissors mode) and the quadrupole-octupole (2_1^+x3_1^-)1^- state in these nuclei. Strong dipole excitations which are candidates for the two-phonon states of interest were observed in both nuclei. We have measured the parity quantum numbers of these levels at HIγS.
