Circular Dichroism of Atomic Florescence
Abstract
In recent years there has been considerable interest in the circular dichrosin (CD) of double photoionization of He and even the CD of single photoionization of an atom (c.f. J. Feagin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 043001, 2002). A closely related experiment is to look at spontaneously emitted light from an optically pumped sample of rubidium. Using a double slit experiment, it should be possible to observe the CD generated by the exp(-i m φ) dependance of the atomic wavefunction as the input laser helicity is flipped. We have constructed an appropriate apparatus and obtained interference signals, and are now working to measure their phase to demonstrate CD.
