Polarized Electron Impact Dissociation of H_2
Abstract
We have measured the polarization of Balmer-α emission from atomic hydrogen following the dissociation of H2 by longitudinally polarized electrons. The scattered electrons are not detected, and the Balmer-α fluoresence is detected along the incident electron beam axis. We observe a significant circular polarization of the light which persists for approximately 15 eV above the dissociation-excitation threshold. Such polarization is proportional to the exchange cross section for this process.
