Large-eddy Simulation of Turbulent Open-channel Flow over a Dune
Abstract
Large-eddy simulation (LES) is coupled with the level-set method to simulate turbulent open-channel flow over a two-dimensional dune. Two flow depths are considered to investigate the effects of flow depth on free-surface deformation and turbulent flow structures. The near-wall distributions of the mean streamwise velocity are similar in the two cases. LES reveals quite different patterns of free-surface deformation and near-wall flow structures. Near-wall streaky structures that are observed in deep-water flow are absent in shallow-water flow. The larger free-surface deformations in the shallow-water case imply stronger air motion simulated by the level-set method. Large tube-like vortical structures are observed close to the free surface in the shallow-water flow.
