POD of wavefront sensor data through a plane mixing layer
Abstract
The snapshot proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) was used to analyze turbulent characteristics of a plane mixing layer. A 2-D Hartmann wavefront sensor measured optical tilt for propagation through a flow field downstream of a splitter plate. Refractive-index fluctuations were created by slightly heating the low-speed flow. The small temperature differences enabled the sensor to capture fluctuations within the mixing layer resulting from large-scale turbulent structure. The most energetic tilt (or optical deflection) can be represented by relatively few eigenmodes. The results are compared with conditional averages for the same data.
