Rhic pc Cni Polarimeter, Current Status and Future Plans
Abstract
Acceleration of polarized protons at RHIC requires fast and reliable measurements of proton beam polarization. There are not many physical processes which could be used to measure polarization of protons with momentum larger than 10 GeV. Elastic scattering with very small momentum transferred is one of these processes. Its advantages are large cross section, which gives large figure of merit, and weak energy dependence of the analyzing power. CNI polarimeter with ultra thin carbon ribbon target and silicon detectors for recoiled nuclei was successfully tested with internal polarized beam at AGS. Then the polarimeter consisting of 4 silicon detectors was used for RHIC polarized beam commissioning in the blue ring. This year polarimeters of 6 silicon detectors each are to work in both rings to ensure RHIC polarized beam collisions.
