SEMAA and OSS: A partnership at York College, CUNY
Abstract
that originated with the vision of former congressman, Louis Stokes, who wanted to raise the limits for his district?s children. SEMAA was established in 1993 as a part- nership between NASA?s Glen Research Center and Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, and has grown to fifteen sites around the country. The York College site opened in 1999 and runs during the summer on a daily basis for one-week sessions. There are also fall and spring sessions on Saturdays, which each last eight weeks. The curriculum was designed by collaboration between the Glen Research Center and the Fernbank Science Center in Atlanta and is based on an aerospace theme. Although the National SEMAA office has curricula for grades K through 12, the York site is limited to 4th through 8th grades. The program utilizes an Aeronautics Education Laboratory installed by the National SEMAA program, which includes a wind tunnel, aircraft design station, weather station and a virtual reality flight simulator among others. With the funding of the York College Outreach Program (YCOOP) by OSS, there are a number of opportunities for collaborations with SEMAA. The astronomer hired un- der YCOOP, Dr. Tim Paglione, directed Starlab planetarium demonstrations to every SEMAA class in the summer 2001 session. Additional collaborations will be pursued in the coming year.
