Effects of ionospheric damping on the MHD wave mode structure
Abstract
We present the mode structure of MHD waves for different ionospheric damping decrements in the dipole model. We have newly added the effect of the ionospheric dissipations to the previous three-dimensional dipole model, which allows a realistic Alfven speed profile for the plasmasphere and realistic boundary conditions at the outer boundaries in local times. It will be shown how the wave spectra and amplitude distribution depend on the ionospheric damping for both transverse and compressional waves. When the magnetosphere is impulsively excited, each mode structure selected among the plasmaspheric resonant modes is investigated on the different meridians as well as the equatorial plane. Our numerical results suggest that, while the transverse modes are strongly affected by the ionospheric damping, the compressional modes are rather stable.
