Observation of crystalline state of the graded structured Bi-Sb alloy prepared under a strong gravitational field of around 1 million G
Abstract
The atomic-scale graded structure had been formed in an all-proportional miscible alloy of antimony(Sb)-bismuth(Bi) (70:30 in mol%) system by sedimentation of substitutional solute atoms under a strong gravitational field at high temperature ((0.85-1.03)x106 G at 220-240. for 85 hours). In the strong gravitational field region, large, long crystals oriented in the direction of gravity was observed, where crystal sizes were several mm long and several hundreds of μm wide, while those in the relative weak gravitational field region were several 10 μm. However, the crystalline state has not been well investigated, and the mechanism of the crystal growth is unknown. In this study, the crystalline state was investigated by the back- reflection Laue method, and so on. It was found that the large crystalline strains existed in the crystal grains in the strong gravitational field region, and it increased with the gravitational field.
