Construction of 3D Theater for Undergraduate Study of Astronomy
Abstract
We are constructing a 3D theater for research and educational uses of the Faculty of Science at Chiba University. This theater consists of a graphic workstation (ONYX2), a bright DLP projector and other audio visual equipment, by which we are able to project time-divided stereoscopic images. The 3D theater is a powerful tool to give a virtual image of astrophysical phenomena of which one may have some trouble in imagining, because of the large difference in space-time scales from daily life. As a pilot program of this theater, we are now creating a 3D software package to express the Galactic stellar system with Hipparcos data. In this software, stars from the Hipparcos Catalogue are plotted in 3D space with their colors and brightnesses. Some astrophysical objects, e.g., globular clusters, are also included.
