Abstract
Georg Koch (1851-1905) belongs to those astronomers who in the course of their professional activity turned to other topics and therefore disappeared from the view of historians of astronomy. Nevertheless it is rewarding to retrace his life and his scientific works, which took their beginning at Leipzig Observatory and were continued in Hamburg, where he was active as an observer. However, he afterwards moved on to the statistical office of Kiel, and later became director of the statistical office of the revenue service in Hamburg. He wrote a series of important papers on various topics of communal statistics.
