X-ray diffuse scattering by Polarons in La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3
Abstract
High energy x-ray scattering experiments (115 keV) were carried out on a single crystal of La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO3 on the 11ID-C beamline at the Advanced Photon Source. The crystal is the same one where neutron scattering observed diffuse scattering and short-range polaron correlations above the ferromagnetic-metallic state.footnote C. P. Adams, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 3954 (2000). The observed x-ray scattering naturally divides into a diffuse Huang component, and short-range correlation peaks at the (1/4,1/4,0) positions (cubic notation). The intensity of both components increases rapidly as TC is approached from below, and then decreases in intensity above T_C. This is analogous to the behavior observed for the purely elastic scattering via neutrons. The x-ray measurements suggest some structure in the correlation peaks, while the polaron correlation range obtained by both techniques is in good agreement with each other.
