Ultrasonic measurements in URu_2Si_2
Abstract
Velocity and attenuation of two longitudinal ultrasound modes in URu_2Si2 have been measured in magnetic fields up to 50T applied along the crystallographic c-axis in a short pulse 25ms magnet. Sound waves propagated along the a-axis at a temperature of 4K show a three-fold splitting in the velocity dip at the metamagnetic transition in the field region 35-40T. With an increase in temperature the velocity dip changes to a two- and then one-fold transition and finally disappears at about 20K. The magnetic field dependence of ultrasound velocity for wave propagated along c-axis shows a step feature at 35T. The magnitude of the step (sound along c-axis) is about one order smaller than the magnitude of the dip (sound along the a-axis). The research is supported by NSF grants DMR-9704020 and DMR-9911723.
