The new data acquisition system for the 8π γ-ray spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC
Abstract
The 8π array of 20 hpGe γ-ray detectors has recently been re-configured and commissioned at the ISAC facility at TRIUMF for a series of β-decay experiments. An important part of the physics program to be pursued involves measurements of superallowed Fermi β decays for CKM-matrix unitarity tests. The extreme precision required places severe demands on any data acquisition system. We have upgraded our data acquisition system from one based on a LeCroy CAMAC booster (CAB) to one utilizing FERA readout. The system uses Ortec ADC's for digitizing pulse heights, LeCroy TDC's for the Ge times and pile-up markers, and a LeCroy universal logic module acting as a latching scaler to give an absolute event tag, time stamp, and dead time on an event-by-event basis. The data stream is dumped into a VME memory unit, and the acquisition system is run using MIDAS. Features of the new system and its capabilities will be presented.
