Ionization of hydrogen by a high-frequency, elliptically-polarized field
Abstract
We have constructed and installed in our fast-beam apparatus a new cylindrical microwave cavity for producing a 35.94 GHz field with linear (LP), circular (CP), or elliptical (EP) polarization. Our goal is to extend previous LP, CP, EP expermental work that used a 9.904 GHz fieldfootnote M. Bellermann et al, PRL 76, 892 (1996) and 78, 3840 (1997); reviews: Acta Phys. Pol. A 93, 105 (1998); Physica A 288, 98 (2000). that covered the scaled frequency range n_0^3ω=0.04487-1.417 with values of n=31-98. Our new cavity will allow n_0^3ω to reach 5.14, including the range above 2 where previous LP ionization thresholdsfootnote E.J. Galvez et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 61, 2011 (1988) rose systematically above classical thresholds, as was predictedfootnote G. Casati et al., IEEE J. Quant. Elec. 24, 1420 (1988). to occur because of dynamical localization. We will present and discuss our first new ionization data, concentrating on the region of scaled frequencies around the pendulum-like resonance zone near n_0^3ω=1footnote P. Koch and K. van Leeuwen, Phys. Rep. 255, 289 (1995). .
