Measuring the Neutrino Interaction Rates in SNO for Variable Fiducial Volumes
Abstract
Neutrinos from ^8B decays in the Sun are detected in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) via the charged-current and neutral-current dissociation of deuterium as well as the elastic scattering off electrons. A spherical acrylic vessel filled with heavy water and surrounded by a light water shield is used in SNO as the target volume. Using the characteristic radial and solar angle distributions of the neutrino signal and its principal backgrounds we determine the interaction rates of solar neutrinos for variable fiducial volumes. This analysis demonstrates the stability of signal extraction in SNO independent of fiducial volume.
