Construction and Characterization of a Specialized Malmberg-Penning Trap for Confinement of a Non-neutral Radionuclide Plasma
Abstract
The design and construction of a Malmberg-Penning trap for confining a radioactive plasma, specifically the ^7Be+ ion plasma, is discussed. The characteristics used in building a Malmberg-Penning trap are dependent on the characteristics of the plasma being confined. Special consideration is taken for the decay of ^7Be into ^7Li. After the construction of the trap, the magnetic field is characterized to determine its strength and variability. In order to distinguish between ^7Be and ^7Li in the trap, a 0.5 T magnetic field with a variability less than 50 μT is needed. It is shown to be possible to create a magnetic field in the center 10 cm of the trap with μT variability.
