Bursty Energetic Electrons in the Cusp Region Discovered by Cluster
Abstract
Bursty energetic electrons enhancements have been observed in the north cusp when CLUSTER was travelling outbound on 5 April 2001. These electrons were at energies of about 20-400 keV. These electron events are characterized by strong impulsive increases in the flux whereas energetic ions were not obvious change. These bursts electrons are well confined in the samll scale flux rope structure as implied by the magnetic field data. These observations indicated that energetic electron leak out of the magnetosphere into the cusp through the localized transient reconnection.
