Adaptation Options of Farmers to Long Term Climate Change in the Sahel-Sudan - What Research into Seasonal Forecasting Opportunities Tells Us
Abstract
Since 1997 Tufts University and the University of Georgia have conducted the Climate Forecasting for Agricultural Resources (CFAR) Project, a multidisciplinary project with the goal of determining how farmers in Burkina Faso can use climate monitoring and forecasts to enhance agricultural sustainability and food security. CFAR-1 field research was based on participant observation, ethnographic interviews, and household surveys. We have found that farmers have a wide range of response options open to them to respond to climate variability that are also possible adaptation options to long-term climate change. Adaptation will be eased if active efforts are also undertaken in related development areas such as institutional reform, population control and health, construction of better infrastructure, and social equity.
