Growth of Bi 2Sr 2Ca n-1 Cu nO y superconducting whiskers
Abstract
We prepared Bi 2Sr 2Ca n-1 Cu nO y (Bi-based) whiskers with length of about 8 mm at a growth temperature of 880°C in flowing oxygen of about 80 ml/min for 240 h. From the results of X-ray diffraction patterns and ab-plane resistance-temperature characteristics, we found that the whiskers consisted of almost entirely Bi 2Sr 2CaCu 2O y (Bi-2212) with small amount of Bi 2Sr 2Ca 2Cu 3O y (Bi-2223) intergrowths which do not form a continuous filament between the electrodes. In addition, the ratios of Bi-2212 to Bi-2223 can be changed by the heat-treatments after growth of as-grown whiskers.
