Second-class currents and Δ s in ν( ν¯) p elastic scattering
Abstract
ν( ν¯) p elastic scattering is sensitive to the magnitude, Δ s, of the strange quark's presence within the proton. But it is also sensitive to the strength of second-class currents so we must be assured that the effect of such currents, having regard for the experimental upper limit to their strength, is negligible before extracting Δ s from such scattering. It is shown that searches for Δ s through ν( ν¯) p elastic scattering are unlikely to be troubled by this consideration below neutrino energies of about 0.1 GeV but that at higher energies very serious uncertainty arises.
