Visual, video and photographic observations of the Leonid meteor shower in 1998
Abstract
Reasonably favourable weather conditions over the United Kingdom allowed the collection of the Section's largest set of Leonid data for a great many years. Peak activity, with Zenithal Hourly Rate of the order of 250 was found around 1998 Nov 17d 04h UT (Solar longitude(2000.0) (?(2000.0))= 234.64°), some 15-16 hours ahead of the expected maximum around the time of node-passage. Activity in this early peak was dominated by bright events, including a high proportion leaving long-duration persistent trains. Orbits were obtained for five of the meteors by the Section's Multiple Station Imaging Group.
