Reflected shock states in water
Abstract
We have performed laser-driven shock wave experiments to study reflected shock states in water using the Vulcan facility at Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory. The shocks were generated by irradiating a stepped aluminum pusher with 7 beams of the Vulcan laser, and transmitting the shock into a sample of water situated behind the pusher. A fused silica anvil was attached to the top step of the pusher leaving a water gap between the silica anvil and the bottom step. Using a VISAR technique we tracked the shocks transmitted from the pusher into the water sample, from the pusher into the silica anvil, and from the shocked water into the silica anvil. From this data we extract reflected-shock Hugoniot data for shocked water in the several-Mbar pressure range.
