The strength of Al and Cu in Strain rate of 5 ´ 10^8 s-1
Abstract
Strain rates in the range of (1.5-5) ´ 10^8 s-1 were achieved in Al and Cu. A pico-second laser (20-100 ps) beam focused on the surface of thin foils, created shock waves inside the foils. An optically recording interferometer system (ORVIS) was applied to measure the free-surface-velocity history using a nanosecond laser. The spall strengths obtained in these experiments were very close to the ultimate spall strength values given by the EOS.
