Transport properties and the pseudogap in HTS superconductors
Abstract
The impact of the normal-state pseudogap on transport properties and critical currents in high-Tc superconductors is investigated on experimental and theoretical grounds. It is shown that the recently described enhancement in Jc arising from Ca-substitution in YBa2Cu3O7-d is probably due to the suppression of the pseudogap in otherwise underdoped grain boundaries. Investigation of the resistivity in Zn-substituted samples in which Tc is progressively reduced to zero shows that the pseudogap temperature, T* falls abruptly to zero at the critical doping concentration (p = 0.19) at which critical currents and other superconducting properties are maximised.
